High Speed Rail -Senate Appropriations Subcommittee.

Letter to Honorable Daniel K.Inouye, Honorable Patty Murray, Honorable Thad Cochran, Honorable Christopher Bond

On behalf of the American High Speed Rail Alliance, I respectfully urge the Committee to fund the High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail(HSIPR) program at a level of at least $2.5 billion in FY2011,which was the enacted funding level in FY2010.This will allow the high speed rail program to maintain the momentum built from the ARRA bill and the FY2010 appropriations process, and help create a stable market for passenger rail development in the United States.

The American High Speed Rail Alliance is a new Organization representing the combined interests of the rail industry and its various sectors, including state and local governments and American organized labor in advocating for developing high speed rail in U.S. Higher speed intercity passenger rail can help solve many of the current challenges we face as a nation. Development and construction of a high speed rail system will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, result in major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from short haul air travel and long distance passenger car trips, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, help us control the ballooning cost of maintaining the nation’s highway infrastructure and limit congestion on our already crowded roads.
